C A S E S T U D Y VIEWPOINT.com | +1 800.333.3197 The University of Aberdeen built a new library and institute relying on Viewpoint For Projects The Library, designed by leading Danish architectural practice Schmidt Hammer Lassen, provides facilities for almost 14,000 students and the local community. The building also houses the university's historic collections comprising more than 200,000 rare books and over 4,000 archive collections. The Rowett Research Institute building has been built after the merger of the University of Aberdeen and the institute with the vision of making Aberdeen a world leader in nutrition and health research. Standing at 10 stories in height, the library is square in shape and set on a double height base that is inset slightly from the main bulk of the building. The space serves as a reading room for the university's special collections library and also showcases its rare books and documents. The building rises to a flat peak and has sheer, glazed curtain wall that runs over the roof level of the building; the glazing is designed to act as a buffer against the elements for the building. In the dark winter months, the glazing produces a warm-looking glow, while in the warmer summer months it has a fresh airy look. Inside the library, a large organically shaped atrium cuts through every floor creating visual connectivity throughout the entirety of the study spaces. The Rowett Institute buildings consist of the physical relocation of the nutritional expertise of the Rowett Research Institute to a new building on the Forester hill site, close to the Institute of Applied Health Sciences.
